Mixing

Technically, mixing is the process of taking multiple recorded tracks (3 tracks through hundreds of tracks) and blending them together using a mixing system. The final result is usually a two channel (stereo left and right) performance. For surround (or 5.1) mixes, the multiple tracks are mixed down to six tracks (left, center, right, left surround, right surround, low frequency effects)

Creatively, mixing can be an amazing adventure. It's the time when the production team can focus on the colour and the overall density of the final sound. It can be as simple as summing several pairs of microphone, as usually is the case with classical recordings. It can also be quite a complex process, including editing, automation, processing and often adding to the already recorded tracks.

Success and efficiency in the art of mixing is achieved through experience and a keen sense of listening. Having worked on a wide variety of music projects, John D.S. Adams offers a level of experience that is unique.

Now in collaboration with Doane-Leblanc, Stonehouse Sound is capable of mixing in full 5.1 surround for theatrical, broadcast or DVD release.

Recording / Tracking

This is a very important stage of music production. The writers, producers, directors and/or conductors decide on overall arrangements and general sound of the music. The Engineer chooses the best means of capturing the resultant performances. With intelligent selection and placement of  microphones, careful choice of microphone preamps and the means of recording, the engineer captures the essence of the music. When using digital recording systems, the critical step of converting the performance from analogue sound into the digital domain for editing, mixing and mastering has a huge impact on the sound. Careful selection of top notch converters should always be taken.

Mastering

Mastering is the technical and creative act of balancing, equalizing and enhancing the final mixes so that the finished product will have achieved the maximum musicality possible. Mastering is the last step in the production chain, from which a master is produced. This master becomes the template for the manufactured commercial release.

Working in a familiar, controlled listening environment Stonehouse Sound can offer a new perspective. An educated, fresh, focused listening perspective is an invaluable asset to your music project.

How long does it take to master? This depends largely on what needs to be done. Assembling premastered material can be pretty quick. Full mastering jobs with touchups on EQ, compression and limiting, can take much longer. Stonehouse Sound can work on a flat rate, an hourly rate, or on a per-track basis.

After the mastering is complete, we provide you with a reference CD for your approval. If changes are required, they are performed and the final master (CDR or DDP) is produced including a complete PQ code list and a guaranteed CD master. In the unlikely event that the manufacturing plant finds fault in the master, Stonehouse Sound will provide a new master at no charge
